Pussy Riot stays in jail another six months

The Russian feminist punk rock band Pussy Riots jailed for six more months. A Moscow judge has ordered three members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot to spend the next six months in jail. The three members – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich and Maria Alekhina – were remanded in custody until January 2013. The girls have been jailed since January 2012, after they performed an anti-Putin stunt in Moscow’s most important church – the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Many religious Russians who took offence of the bands church stunt, have later called for their release. A poll released recently showed that over 50% were against pursuing the criminal case against the three women. The women may risqué up to 7 years in jail.

Many groups are protesting against the authorities’ treatment of the girls – among them the Ucraine feminist and top-less protesters Femen. Several celebrities have also appealed for girl. The girls are considered as political prisoners by the Union of Solidarity with Political Prisoners (SPP).[10] Amnesty International named them prisoners of conscience due to “the severity of the response of the Russian authorities”.
